A Porch is the Most Popular Amenity of Log Home Owners

A porch is not only a place but a state of mind.  It is a place of community for friends and family where you can just sit down for a spell and enjoy time together.  Imagine being able to sit back with friends and neighbors in your new log home to celebrate and enjoy the natural beauty of your surroundings. No wonder porches continue to be the most popular amenity of log home owners!

Most Gastineau log homes that are sold have at least one porch.  Some have as much square footage of porch as house!  The design of your porch will be your first consideration and a lot will depend on the amount you want to spend.  First decide how you plan to use your porch.  Cooking? Dining? Enjoying the view?  Designed properly, a porch can do it all!

A porch is quite an asset since it helps reduce the maintenance of your home and increases longevity.  A porch protects your exterior walls from sun, rain and snow, all three of which can cause damage.  The best way to decrease maintenance for your home is to have a porch to protect the walls, with the south and west walls being the most important.  Even if you only have a small front porch, it can protect you when you are coming in during the rain or snow and adds character to the exterior of your home.

An outdoor kitchen with some sort of porch roof is a popular choice these days and helps keep the chef out of the elements and enables you to use this space more often for cooking.  A porch roof will also protect your outdoor kitchen and furniture and increase their longevity.

How much should you spend on a new porch? The design of the porch has a big impact on the cost.  The materials for a shed porch will include costs for the roof, ceiling, floor system, and posts, for example.  We now offer both square porch posts or round porch posts.  The new round posts from Oak are quite spectacular.  The grain patterns from a round cut are simply beautiful.

Other costs to consider when designing a porch are labor and the support posts or concrete that go from the ground up to the porch floor for support. The value of your porch will be included in your appraisal, so a porch can be a great investment.

We would love to meet with you to help you design and build the perfect porch for you and your family.  Gastineau Log Homes has over 40 years of experience  helping people realize their dream of building a log home.  Contact us today and let’s explore your log home dream together.
